Smart Concrete™ for Pavement Application

PROBLEM

The Smart Concrete Difference

Giatec’s Smart Concrete™ technology offers an effective solution for real-time monitoring of concrete strength during construction. The technology is simple. First, wireless sensors are embedded in the concrete at the time of pouring. Then, the Smart Concrete™ mobile app is used to wirelessly connect to the sensor and view the concrete temperature and strength data at the jobsite. This data can then be instantly shared between team members and used to optimize project timelines.

SOLUTION

Optimizing Project Scheduling for Concrete Pavement
Smart Concrete™ offers a number of advantages for pavement application, where strength data is required to optimize opening roads to traffic.

Tomlinson, a Smart Concrete™ producer, successfully used the technology in one of their recent pavement projects. In one portion of Highway 417 where panel replacement was required, Tomlinson used Smart Concrete™ to determine when the lanes could be opened.

RESULTS

How Smart Concrete™ Helped Improve Project Scheduling
Access to real-time strength results on the jobsite significantly improved project scheduling. Engineers were notified (within an hour) when they could open the concrete pavement to traffic. Previously, concrete cylinders (break tests) were used to measure concrete strength. The cylinders had to be sent to a lab 100 kilometers away from the jobsite, and contractors had to wait to receive the results from the labs.

The Smart Concrete™ technology is based on the well-established concept of concrete maturity according to the ASTM C1074 standard. This test method is also specified by the CSA A23.1,2 as a means and method of measuring the in-place strength of concrete.
