Seabed CPT system     The Manta-200 represents the latest generation Cone Penetration Test (CPT) system for determining offshore seabed soil conditions. Deployed from a steady positioned vessel or platform, the Manta-200 is designed for rapid and reliable results. Since its introduction in 2013 it has successfully completed challenging projects around the world and its performance is unsurpassed. Available in three different configurations, the Manta200 is suitable for almost any project: Shallow Water (SW), up to 150 m water depth Medium Deep Water (MDW), up to 500 m Deep Water (DW), up to 1,200 m      The Manta-200 is built around our in-house developed Continuous Drive System (CDS) that was designed with a clear focus on durability and high production. It also guarantees uninterrupted penetration of the cone. Nearshore CPT system   The Shark-200 (Submersible Heave-free Aquatic Riser Kit) is designed to produce the highest quality marine CPT(U) without the marine environment affecting your CPT(U) data. The Shark-200 is designed for nearshore and inshore CPT projects. Depths from 2 to 30 m can be covered with great efficiency. The Shark-200 is ideal for CPT works in harbors, waterways and channels. Fairly standard and widely available marine plants can be used as a support base for the Shark-200.   Geomil Equipment’s Shark-200 is developed for nearshore and inshore Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) projects. Water depths from 2 to 30 m can be covered with great efficiency. The Shark-200 is ideal for CPT works in ports, waterways and channels. The Shark-200 is designed to perform marine CPT’s of the highest quality. The system eliminates the environmental effects on the CPT data, such as tides, swell and currents. Fairly standard and widely available marine plants can be used as a support base for the Shark-200. With minor preparations the system can be suited for deployment from port quay walls. This allows for the collection of geotechnical data very close to the revetment. Other versatile setups are possible and can be discussed in detail with our engineering specialists. Field work with the Shark-200 requires 2 to 3 geotechnical operators on each shift with the support of marine crew which typically comes with the marine plant. The actual operation is simple and straight forward. After some basic training given by Geomil engineers, any geotechnical contractor will be able to operate the Shark-200 successfully. Having access to a Shark-200 in the equipment pool will greatly extend the operating boundaries. Offshore / Onshore Down-the-hole CPT & soil sampling system   The standard version of the Orca-125 system is designed for depths up to 1 200 m and is available for various drill systems and can be deployed for either wire line or umbilical operation. The Orca-125 system consists of three separate down-the-hole tools: Orca-CPT Tool The Orca-CPT Tool is able to perform downhole CPT’s at a maximum thrust force of 125 kN. Two cone sizes are available, a 10 cm² cone version and a downscaled 5 cm² cone version. The latter allows for greater penetration force per cm². The Orca-CPT Tool is available with stroke lengths of 1.50 and 3.00 m. Orca-PST Piston Sampler The Orca-PST Piston Sampler allows undisturbed in-situ soil samples in soft ground conditions (Ø 3” or Ø100 mm, L = 1 m) to be obtained. Orca-PSH Push Sampler The Orca-PSH Push Sampler is suitable for soil and sediment (Ø3” or Ø100 mm, L = 1 m).   The Geomil Equipment Orca-125 is a versatile and fully integrated Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) testing and sampling system for downhole use. It is designed to be combined with several existing drilling methods. The standard version of the Orca-125 system is designed for water depths up to 1,200 m and is available for various drill systems. The Orca-125 can be deployed as a wire line or an umbilical operated tool. With the Orca-125 interval CPT and soil sampling can be conducted intermittently. After completion of a CPT or soil sampling, drilling can be advanced to the next test depth, where the program can continue until final investigation depth is reached. The CPT data can be received in real time if the unit is used in conjunction with the umbilical. When used in wire line mode, the CPT data can be downloaded once the Orca-125 is retrieved to the surface. In umbilical mode, the Orca-125 is supported by an umbilical winch that can run all tools. The umbilical mechanical end can be easily shifted from the OrcaCPT tool to either the PSH or PST tool. During the CPT, the data is displayed in real-time. The Orca-125 ensures high efficiency and repeatable quality of test results. OFFSHORE TESTING   It has been estimated the world's energy consumption will increase by 56% over the next 30 years. Nuclear power and renewables are the fastest-growing sources of world energy, both increasing at an average annual rate of 2.5%. Worldwide, hydroelectricity and wind are the two largest contributors to the increase in global renewable electricity generation (IEA, 2013). Hydrocarbons do however continue to play a major role in the energy market, with platforms being constructed in deeper water to enable access to new oil and gas fields. Offshore energy structures, including wind turbines and oil and gas platforms, experience complex interactions between structure, wind, wave and soil, due to a variety of static, cyclic and dynamic loadings. The design of the foundation for such structures is therefore key for their long-term performance, reduction in foundation cost, and the impact on the environment. We have developed a range of apparatuses that can replicate the two and three dimensional static and dynamic cyclic loadings applied to the foundation soils of offshore energy structures. These include triaxial and direct simple shear systems, which enable the cyclic strength of offshore soils to be determined, along with consolidation properties, small-strain stiffness measurements using local transducers, and static undrained strengths to be assessed for use in the design process. Test Standards for Offshore Testing ASTM D-3999: Determination of Young’s modulus and hysteretic damping coefficient of a soil via the triaxial apparatus. These parameters are important when conducting dynamic response analyses of offshore soils during seismic events, or when assessing the natural frequency of structure and foundation.  ASTM D-5311: Determination of the undrained cyclic strength of a soil via the triaxial apparatus. This parameter is used to evaluate the ability of an offshore soil to resist the repeated cyclic shear stresses induced by wave and wind loading over time. ASTM D-6528: Determination of the static shear strength parameters of a soil via the direct simple shear apparatus.   DMT can be executed from a jackup. Since the working plane is fixed, DMT is executed in the same way as it is executed on land. A guide tube from the working plane, down to the the seafloor, contains the pushrods and prevents them from buckling.     This configuration can be used when the DMT has to be executed in the vicinity of the quay wall. The working plane is fixed and DMT is executed as in the previous figure. In this configuration the DMT is executed from a floating barge (much less expensive than a jackup). The working plane is no longer fixed, but moves according to the waves. The guide tube must be telescopic, to accommodate the oscillations. When taking the DMT readings the top of the pushing rods must be disconnected from the pushing head. In this way the blade will not move during the measurements. The barge must be horizontally anchored, to prevent lateral movement. Details can be found in Lupi 2009. In this arrangement the blade is advanced using the SPT hammer. The floating barge is anchored horizontally. The Seafloor DMT The following pictures illustrate the Seafloor DMT. It is composed of two parts. The lower part is a box filled with steel blocks to provide the reaction when pushing. The upper part is the pushing device. Seafloor DMT Characteristics. Waterdepth = 0 to 100 m. Push capacity 7 ton. Max test depth: depends on soil consistency – it is the depth penetrable with 7 ton push. The ballast in the container must be heavier than the intended push force 6-7 pushrods are already charged vertically on top before lowering the machine. More rods can be added by keeping the string vertical, sustaining it with a buoy – or a trestle fixed to the top of the ballast. The rods, and the blade, advance quasi-statically when electrical power is supplied to the pushing device. No additional advancing rig is needed.
